Acne in Birmingham

What is Acne?

Acne is a very common skin condition characterised by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pus-filled spots (pustules).

It usually starts at puberty and varies in severity from a few spots on the face, neck, back and chest, which most adolescents will have at some time, to a more significant problem that may cause scarring and impact on self-confidence.

For the majority it tends to resolve by the late teens or early twenties, but it can persist for longer in some people.

Acne can develop for the first time in people in their late twenties or even the thirties. It occasionally occurs in young children as blackheads and/or pustules on the cheek

Symptoms –  What does acne look like and what does it feel like?

  • The typical appearance of acne is a mixture of the following: oily skin, blackheads and whiteheads, red spots, yellow pus-filled pimples, and scars.
  • Occasionally, large tender spots or cysts may develop that can eventually burst and discharge their contents or may heal up without bursting.
  • The affected skin may feel hot, painful and be tender to touch.
  • A common misconception is that Acne is caused by poor hygiene, although poor hygiene will increase surface dirt on the skin, it is not the cause of acne prone skin conditions

    We specialise in the treatment of Acne in Birmingham and have a number of specialist treatments available to help you and your skin condition

    When treating Acne, in  most circumstances Acne treatment should be applied to the whole face / skin concern area and not of affected spots only. We will  advise you on what will be the best course of action for you.

    It important to understand it usually takes 2 to 4 months to demonstrate effectiveness of treatments for acne and acne prone skin. This is because we have to treat the cause, allow the skin to repair itself and also work on preventing recurrence or maintaining the results achieved

    Treatment options for Acne may include;

    • Topical treatments ( treatments applied directly onto the skin) such as Obagi Clenziderm system, Adapaline (retinoids)or benzol peroxide
